You have two ways to administer and manage your Windows server, one of these is Plesk which you may be familiar with. The other method is to use Remote Desktop Administration, this allows you to remotely control the Windows desktop of your Dedicated Server.

Before reading more about Remote Desktop, please read and ensure you understand the following statement.

As the systems administrator for your server, you need to understand that any modifications
to the operating system or settings could, if not carefully thought out, render your server
inaccessible or unusable. In a worst case scenario you may need to reinstall the server from
scratch resulting in the loss of all data stored on the server.

[edit] Connecting to your Dedicated Server using Remote Desktop

To connect to the server (remote host), follow these steps:

  1. On you local machine if it is running Windows, click Start, and select Run.
  2. In the prompt type: mstsc
  3. Click OK
  4. This will launch the Microsoft Remote Desktop Client
  5. You will need to type in your Server’s Hostname or IP Address, Eg. IP Address: 62.193.XXX.XXX or Hostname: wpcXXXX.amenworld.com
  6. Click Connect.
  7. When the Log On to Windows dialog box appears, type your user name and password, and then click OK.

The user name and the password will be the password you have been provided with by Amen, if you are unsure of these credentials please log in to your Customer Area and go to the link marked Access Codes.

Once remotely logged in, you have the opportunity to administer the server, look at log files etc, once you reviewed or have made the changes necessary and completed any testing you'll probably wish to exit the RDP session, please disconnect gracefully...

To end your Remote Desktop session (RDP):

  1. Click Start, and then click Log Off at the bottom of the Start menu.
  2. When prompted, click Log Off.
